Yes, Lord, I’ll do it!

Belle Harris Bennett woke up in the middle of the night uttering these words. She had been nurturing a dream of starting a school for women missionaries and lay ministers, and God called her out of her slumber to make this dream a reality.

I am starting seminary today. Yes, it’s only the orientation dinner, but hey, I’ve been eagerly anticipating this day! Over the course of this summer, I have gotten to stretch my congregational ministry legs a little bit, visit people in the hospital and get to know a church from inside the pastoral ministry role. These experiences, combined with some important conversations that affirmed me as a young woman with pastoral gifts to share, were so influential on my confidence level starting seminary. I have been lifted up and prayed for and held by so many adoring friends and family in this time of transition, and I’m so blessed. Thank you, all.

Realizing that I have something to offer to the world is really hard for me sometimes. I think, “But I’m just little ole me…not much going on. Not a big deal.” But there are things going on in this world that I feel the effects of in my life and relationships and in my body, and they become big deals to me. And I have no choice but to say, “Yes, Lord, I’ll do whatever you need me to do, wherever you need me to be.”

This is such a big task. Saying “yes” to many things in life is really hard, and saying “no” is harder for me than most things. But saying “yes” to God means you never know where you’ll end up, really. But it is in the choosing to answer affirmatively that we partner with God and choose to have faith that God will match our passions and our gifts with the world’s needs.
